Waterstone January 2026 Newsletter - The “AND” Markets

Uniquely Waterstone for our unique Waterstone clients

In this Issue:

  • Rochdale Speedometers – indexes strengthen
  • Strategist anticipations
  • AI – Boom, Bubble or Bust?
  • Amazon returns – Where does it all go?
  • Local Find – proactive health – Hogan Holistic
  • Looking for a good book?

Speedometers add green, strengthen neutral and drop a red.

City National Rochdale (CNR) is changing it’s name to RBC Rochdale. It still uses CNR.com for its newly formatted website. Their strong processes continue and will likely evolve over time. This group is a wealth of information generously shared on its website. This group is continuously monitored by our AssetMark partners.

Speedometers showed surprisingly strong improvement in December with the interest rate cut. Read more about each index on cnr.com.

The “And” Markets

We have strong corporate fundamentals AND fragile macro conditions.

We have innovation and structural change with AI AND labor markets softening, policy uncertainty.

We still see US strength AND growing strength/better valuation in Europe & Japan.

Strategists predict more bull market AND greater volatility (market cleaning).

Bonds are now a defensive play to stabilize portfolios, generate income and store funds for future re-allocation.

Common themes: Strategists anticipate dynamic growth, defense through dividends and global diversity.

Is AI Over the Top??

A WFS guiding principle:  How the market works – Short term, it’s emotion and the flow of money.  Long term, it’s earnings.  Share price follows earnings…eventually.  As seen below, the AI leaders continue with growing earnings.  Note the chain that occurs from the tech leader to the second and third tier users.  Examples of the innovation and structural change.

What happens to the stuff we return to Amazon?

New York Times, Nov 17, 2025

Note:  Goods go through this resell cycle 4 or 5 times. The biggest resellers are dollar stores followed by online platforms.  Roths heard Mexican customers talk about large Amazon resale stores in Ensenada, Mexico. “Bargain hunting!  You never know what you’re going to find!”

Hogan Holistic – unique massage therapy

Sean Hogan is a licensed massage therapist (LMT) at Fairport 4 Corners.  His  approach uses a variety of alternative techniques that balance muscular and other body systems.  “It’s all connected.”

Five colleagues within the Sully Trail office go to Sean regularly for their own reasons with good results. Think post cancer treatment, misalignments, injuries, knee and hip surgery recoveries, neuropathy etc.  Our common testimonial is that Sean brought improvement after general medicine didn’t provide satisfactory results. Good results require commitment to his 10 session “reset” program.  This is private pay/no insurance.  What’s it’ worth to feel better?

We at Waterstone want this year to be a year of betterment.  We each know that good health is a gift worth protecting.

Remember WFS Dec article, “Getting Kids to Talk about School” by Amy Morin?

Psychologist Amy Morin suggests seven questions that lead to productive conversations while also helping kids grow mentally stronger.   AND here is the perfect New Yorker cartoon to accompany it!

It’s perfect!! 😊
